On December 4th this year, the Antwerp World Diamond Center industry group unveiled a pair of shoes destined to join the ranks of the world’s most expensive items. Taking luxury footwear to another level, Antwerp is claiming the shoes to be the “World’s Most Expensive shoes.
Indeed, the diamond encrusted and black leather paisley-patterned ankle boots can even be compared to the ruby shoes created for The Wizard of Oz’s 50th Anniversary. Jeweler Harry Winston recreated Dorothy’s red-sequined ruby slippers using a total of 2,329 sparkling diamonds and deep red rubies per shoe in 1990.
The Antwerp ankle boots are studded with about 39,083 fancy-colored gray, champagne and pink natural diamonds. The Antwerp organization revealed that some 30,000 hours were invested in designing the boots. This includes selecting and setting the top-quality luxury stones.
The price for the footwear created by Antwerp is also comparable to the Wizard of Oz commemorative slipper at $3.1 million. Winston’s creation fetched $3 million at auction.
The shoes, prepared in Hong Kong for the city’s Business of Design Week are covered in a total of 1,550 carats. They are from Diarough/UNI-Design and A.F.Vandervorst, both Antwerp-based companies.
Antwerp’s diamond district is known as the Diamond Quarter, or the Square Mile. It lies within the city of Antwerp, Belgium.
