How Intellectual Property Rights Negatively Affected Your Morning Shave
Razor and razor blades are big business. When a manufacturing company designs a new innovation regarding shaving they immediately patent it, so that other manufacturers don’t use their breakthrough design. There is nothing new about this, manufacturer are always looking for the next big thing that will help their item outsell their rivals.

Over a 100 years ago the Gillette Safety Razor Company was founded following the invention by King Gillette of the safety razor. Gillette patented this new design and found overnight success. Gillette produced disposable blades that were effective at shaving whilst cheap to manufacture and sell, this was bad news for two professions- the blade sharpener and the Barber. The cheap, yet sharp blades meant that men could shave at home for the fraction of the cost of getting someone else to do it.

Unfortunately for Gillette, patents expire after approximately 20 years, which meant that his competitors could also produce cheap, disposable blades. Good news for consumers though, as companies are always looking for new ways to perfect the shaving experience, resulting in new innovations which make shaving as easy and as hassle free as possible. Each shaving manufacturer is looking for the next big thing to revolutionise shaving, searching to improve each design.

Unfortunately searching and testing new designs can be an expensive business, one which the consumer ultimately pays for due to the high cost of the products. Manufacturers pay out loads on advertising to get us to believe that we constantly need these new designs and upgrades, when in fact the original classic design of razor works just as well.

Sometimes its best to ignore all the fancy jargon which surrounds specific devices, it is the advertisers job to sell the item and make it sound as brilliant as possible. Instead if you are looking for a new body groomer or beard trimmer read customer reviews, these will give the a more accurate picture of what you are buying into. Aim to read at least 2-3 reviews for each product you are considering and this will help you decide if this is the item for you. There are plenty of reviews available online.
